Do you only work with high achieving students?
I work with students who have a broad range of gpa’s and test scores. There are colleges that meet the academic and social needs of a wide variety of students.

How long have you been a college counselor?
I’ve been advising students who wish to attend college since 1988.

Do you do test prep for SAT’s/ACT’s?
No, I do not. I recommend tutors and companies that specialize in test prep and suggest which tests students should take and when they should take them.

Do you work with students who have learning differences and ADD/ADHD?
Yes. Most colleges provide services for students with special needs. Depending on the particular school, services run the gamut from formal to less structured services.

Do work with students on an individual basis or in small groups?
When I am with a student he/she has my undivided attention. I work exclusively on an individualized basis.

When should we begin the actual college application process?
When you begin high school, you are actually beginning to prepare for college. Your curriculum choices help to determine your college options. While you’ve been preparing for college throughout your school career, January of your junior year, after you have received your PSAT results, is an ideal time to get started on a more formal basis.

Do you provide a list of schools for students?
While I compile a manageable sized list of schools that is individually tailored to each student, it is the student who is the ultimate decision maker in deciding to which schools he/she will apply.

When should we visit colleges?
The best time to visit a college is when school is in session, not during holidays. Students give life to a campus; otherwise, you are seeing empty buildings.

Do you write the college recommendation letter?
The counselor recommendation letter is written by a student’s high school counselor. We do, however, talk about approaches to take when asking counselors and teachers for recommendation letters.

Is it okay to take a year off in between high school and college?
Going directly from high school to college is not the best option for everyone. Many times a year off gives a student a clearer idea of what he/she wants from the college experience.

You are located in the Seattle area, and I live on the east coast (or another country), can we still work together?
I’ve worked with students who live all across the U.S. and with many from other countries.

Do you know about colleges and universities across the country?
I have visited colleges all across the country and am familiar with the various opportunities available to students at colleges in different settings and locations.

Do you ever work with students who want to attend a university in Canada? Canadian universities can be a good option for students to consider. I have attended programs sponsored by Canadian universities, and several students I’ve worked with have attended Canadian schools.

Do you advise students who are seeking graduate degrees?
I have extensive experience in counseling students who wish to attend graduate school in a variety of disciplines including M.D., MBA, MSW, PA and other Masters and Ph.D. programs.
